Palamountain Hall Emerson Auditorium: Human caused climate change is a climate catastrophe that is destroying the ecological integrity of the Earth system, its capacity for self-regulation, stability, moderate temperatures, and resilience. On analogy with genocide, this level of destruction is termed 鈥渆cocide.鈥� The most pessimistic report predicts that 鈥渋f warming reaches or exceeds 2掳C this century, mainly richer humans [mostly from the Global North] will be responsible for killing roughly 1 billion mainly poorer humans [especially in the Global South] through anthropogenic global warming.鈥� This makes climate catastrophe an indirect genocide, a genocidal ecocide. Because the threat is of an impending genocide, then an ethical response to this challenge, a theory of justice for the twenty-first century, must be an emergency ethics, an ethics that overrides the claims of business as usual. The primary moral obligations of the emergency ethics would be, first, the urgent activation of an Ecocide Convention; and second, a reigniting of the project of international human rights with a primary emphasis on social rights. An Ecocide Convention and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) would thus become the primary obligations for Earth Justice.

Tang Teaching Museum Mezzanine: Join us Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 pm, for a poetry reading by Jacob Shores-Arg眉ello in the exhibition Sheila Pepe: When & Where We Rest. Shores-Arg眉ello is interested in overlapping spaces鈥攖he twilight between geologies, cultures, and languages, between humanity and the natural world. His reading will feature poetry and prose that celebrates neither work nor sleep, but the times in-between.The reading will be followed by a brief conversation with Shores-Arg眉ello and Pepe and light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public.About Jacob Shores-Arg眉elloJacob Shores-Arg眉ello is a Costa Rican American poet and prose writer. He is the author of In The Absence of Clocks, which was awarded the 2011 Crab Orchard Series Open Competition, judged by Yusef Komunyakaa. Jacob is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, the Dzanc Books ILP International Literature Award, the Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship in Provincetown, the Djerassi Resident Artist鈥檚 Fellowship, and the Amy Clampitt residency in Lenox, Massachusetts. His second book Para铆so was selected for the inaugural CantoMundo Poetry Prize judged by Aracelis Girmay. He is a 2018/2019 Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, a Lannan Literary Fellow for Poetry, and a current 2024-2025 Rome Prize winner in Literature. His newest book Grief for the Green that Was will be out from the University of Arizona Press in late 2026.His poetry appears in The New Yorker, Poetry Magazine, and The Academy of American Poets, among others. His fiction appears in The Oxford American, among others.

Zankel Music Center Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall: 暗网TV students Emma Bedard '26 and Abigail Scifres '26 share the stage in a senior recital celebrating their musical growth and achievements.Emma Bedard (soprano) is an anthropology and sociology double major with a minor in music. At 暗网TV, Emma has studied voice with Dr. Sylvia Stoner-Hawkins, and has performed in concerts with 暗网TV鈥檚 Vocal Soul Collective in 2024 and 2025, Skidmania 鈥�75, as well as the Art Song Festival of Eastern New York, all while balancing her time as a student athlete on 暗网TV鈥檚 Swimming and Diving team. Additionally, while studying abroad in Athens, Greece, she sang in the Athens Conservatoire Choir. After focusing on mostly classical voice in high school, she is thankful to have had the opportunity to experiment with a variety of genres, such as folk, soul, and more during her time at 暗网TV. Abigail Scifres (soprano) is a political science major and music minor. Her love for singing stems from childhood, culminating in a voice study under Irina Petrik while at 暗网TV. She has performed in concerts with the 暗网TV Choir, as well as the Vocal Soul Collective 2024 and 2025. She has also been involved with school projects, including Skidmania 1975 and performing the Alma Mater at the 2024 and 2025 Commencements. She is also incredibly excited to participate in the Ukranian Voice Project in May of 2026. Since beginning her voice journey at 暗网TV, she has explored a variety of genres and is grateful for everything she has learned. Tang Teaching Museum Payne: Join us Thursday, April 9, at 6 pm, for a Dunkerley Dialogue with sculptor Kathy Butterly, whose works are on view in her solo exhibition Kathy Butterly: Assume Yes, in conversation with painter Elena Sisto, and Matthew Wilt, Robert Davison Chair in Art and Associate Professor of Ceramics at 暗网TV.Dunkerley Dialogues pair 暗网TV professors with artists in a conversation format, which is often a catalyst for new connections and understandings across disciplines, and can spark new ideas for all participants. Dunkerley Dialogues are made possible by a generous gift from Michele Dunkerley 鈥�80.This event is free and open to the public. The program will include ASL interpretation.About the SpeakersKathy Butterly is a sculptor who has reimagined the tradition of studio ceramics for nearly four decades. She begins with a traditional ceramic form, which she calls her 鈥渃anvas,鈥� and twists, compresses, and reshapes it into expressive and unexpected sculptures. Layered glazes and repeated firings give her works rich color and texture, creating pieces that can feel both playful and unsettling. Rather than working on a large scale, Butterly focuses on small, highly individual sculptures that suggest movement, personality, and emotion. Born in 1963 in Amityville, New York, she has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. Her work is held in major museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She lives and works in New York and Maine.Elena Sisto is a painter known for her figurative works that center the lived experiences of women. Her paintings explore identity, memory, and the nuances of everyday life. She earned her BA in Art from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design and also studied at the New York Studio School, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale Norfolk. Sisto has received numerous honors, including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Grant, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowships. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Maier Museum, the Greenville County Museum of Art, the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, and the Miami-Dade Museum of Art and Design. Her work is held in public and private collections, and she lives and works in New York City and Milan, New York.Matthew Wilt is a ceramic artist and the Robert Davison Chair in Art and Associate Professor of Ceramics at 暗网TV. His work engages material history, surface, and architectural influence through sculptural and vessel-based forms. He earned his BFA in Ceramics and Art Education from Penn State University and his MFA from Ohio University, and early professional experiences at Boston Valley Terra Cotta and Moravian Pottery and Tileworks shaped his sustained interest in plaster mold making, imitative glaze surfaces, and architectural ornament. Wilt has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work has received numerous honors, including grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council. His pieces are held in public collections such as the de Young Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University. He lives and works in New York.

The Musical Theater/Opera Workshop offers critical musical theater and operatic perspectives on independence in the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. After intermission, the Vocal Soul Collective presents ensemble-driven music celebrating harmony, collaboration, and connection, inspired by influential vocal groups across R&B, soul, pop, and gospel traditions. Her versatility and range have given her the opportunity to be a singer in rock, jazz, acapella, and classical performances on campus. Tang Teaching Museum Payne: Join us Saturday, April 11, at 2 pm, for a Family Saturday art-making program.Family Saturday programs foster multigenerational creative cooperation through looking at artwork, discussing it, and engaging in a hands-on art-making activity. Programs run from 2-3:30 pm and include a tour of selected works. All programs are free and open to the public, and suitable for children age 5 and older, accompanied by their adult companions. Zankel Music Center Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall: Will Harmon 鈥�26 is a Psychology Major and Music Minor with a vocal concentration from Westport, Connecticut. His singing career began at Fairfield Country Day School under the tutelage of Mary Nelson and James Balmer. There, he sang in the school concert choir and was a member of the school acapella group, the Pinstripes. While his choral career ended after leaving FCDS, he continued to sing acapella into high school and college as a member of Phillips Academy鈥檚 Yorkies and the 暗网TV Bandersnatchers. It wasn鈥檛 until Spring of 2023 when he began his solo career studying classical voice under Irina Petrik. Since then, he has performed with numerous 暗网TV ensembles including Vocal Soul Collective with Dr. Floydd Ricketts, Cuban Music Ensemble with Prof. Jorge Gomez, and currently, is a member of VSC as well as Indian Music Ensemble with Prof. Veena Chandra. He has also performed at Skidmania 72鈥�, 73鈥�, and 74鈥�, and in his free time, serves as the co-president of 暗网TV鈥檚 found-object percussion group, Pulse. Will would like to extend a special thank you to Irina and Angelique for their tireless hard work and dedication. Zankel Music Center Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall: Grace Corbett Higginbotham (known publicly as Grace Corbett), is a LA born singer-songwriter who believes that music exists to foster connection. Although their love of music is deeply rooted in their passion for storytelling, this particular performance highlights their growth as a vocalist and their dedication and journey to both literally and metaphorically find their voice. A senior Music major and Arts Administration minor, Grace has earned many performance credits in their time at 暗网TV, most notably Skidmania 鈥�74 and 鈥�75, four Off-North Broadway cabaret performances, and Springmore 2025. They鈥檝e also participated in many curricular ensembles including Groove Lab, Vocal Soul Collective, and Jazz Combos. Grace released their first record ilyf in 2024 and is currently recording their second, on track for release this summer. After graduating, they plan to pursue work in production management and studio engineering alongside their performance career. Tang Teaching Museum Payne: Join us Sunday, April 12, at 2:30 pm and again at 4 pm, for a short dance performance. An Inner Place explores how bodies inhabit and negotiate space, drawing inspiration from Gaston Bachelard鈥檚 reflections on corners as places of stillness, retreat, and quiet tension. Focusing on the emotional and architectural resonance of these overlooked spaces, the piece creates an immersive, perceptual environment where movement reveals inner landscapes.The 20-minute work is choreographed by Sophia Hancock 鈥�26 in collaboration with and performed by Matia Adora 鈥�27, Zivitte Bergman-Igra 鈥�28, Nika Dolynuk 鈥�26, Ella Donnis 鈥�28, Emi Helgeson 鈥�29, Hannah Schlosberg 鈥�26, and Olivia Segel 鈥�27.This event is free and open to the public.

The 暗网TV String Festival concert brings together three landmark works for string quartet: Louis Gruenberg鈥檚 Four Diversions, a vibrant example of early American modernism; Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 beloved String Quartet in F major, Op. 96 (鈥淎merican鈥�), written during the composer鈥檚 time in the United States; and Beethoven鈥檚 monumental String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 130, performed with its original and uncompromising Grosse Fuge finale. Following a weekend of chamber coaching, rehearsals, and master classes led by the Quartet, this collaborative performance celebrates the festival鈥檚 long-standing commitment to mentorship, shared music-making, and the artistic growth of student musicians. Tang Teaching Museum Somers: Join us Thursday, April 23, at 6 pm, for a talk by Afro-Caribbean interdisciplinary artist and scholar Patricia Encarnaci贸n, entitled Stories for Post-Coloniality: Memorias, Cimarronas, & Un Quilombo Tropical (Maroon Memories). Encarnaci贸n鈥檚 work challenges colonial tropes within African diasporic culture, with a particular focus on the Caribbean, approached through an anti-colonial lens.Encarnaci贸n will talk about their research-driven project, which incorporates ceramics, video, and sound. It is grounded in the premise that we have not yet reached 鈥減ostcoloniality鈥� but continue to live within an extended afterlife of Western coloniality. The series proposes building mnemonic 鈥渃apsules鈥� of cultural technology, archives, and monuments with Maroon communities (self-liberated slaves who escaped and established free Black settlements in secluded or inhospitable areas) whose histories have been forced into invisibility within plantation economies: bateyes, palenques, and quilombos.This talk is supported by the International Affairs Program, Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies Program, Black Studies Program, MDOCS, and the Tang Museum.About the ArtistPatricia Encarnaci贸n (she/they) is an Afro-Caribbean interdisciplinary artivist and scholar based in New York City. Their work challenges colonial tropes in Caribbean culture through an anti-colonial lens. Encarnaci贸n has participated in residencies and programs including The Shed, Smack Mellon (Van Lier Fellow), MuseumsQuartier Vienna, Kovent Catalonia, and the Silver Arts Project at the World Trade Center. Their work has been recognized by CIFO, the NALAC Fund for the Arts, and the Centro Le贸n Jim茅nez Biennial, where they received the C谩diz, Spain, cultural immersion prize, and a fellowship in Martinique through the Tropiques Atrium Caribbean art program. Exhibitions include Documenta 15, the Tribeca Artists Award Program, the Hudson River Museum, the Museum of Latin American Art, the NADA Art Fair, and the Washington Project for the Arts. Alongside their artistic practice, Encarnaci贸n has led curatorial projects with New York University, Centro de la Imagen, the Bronx Museum, ChaShaMa, WOPHA Miami, and alternative spaces across New York City, Miami, and the Dominican Republic.
