Course Description

Telling Lives: Stories of Self and Society

Instructor(s): Maria Lander, World Languages and Literatures

How do we write a life? What counts as a “life” that deserves to be told and who gets to tell it? This interdisciplinary seminar explores the many ways lives are narrated: biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, obituaries, portraits, testimonios and social media profiles. Drawing on literature, history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and media studies, students will analyze how lives are shaped by memory, power, culture, and genre.

Course Offered: 2026
